O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol at the beginning of 2005 when she was still a high school student. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was given high marks from the jury. But she was a victim of massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed in the bottom three, as well as the bottom two. They were stunned at the result and exhorted viewers to show support for contestants with strong singing talents, like Melissa. After giving consistently stellar performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced to the final two in the finals of the competition, Werner reportedly forecast that morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became the third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a phone call from Canadian the Prime Minister Paul Martin congratulating her on winning Canadian Idol right away.
